February 1 marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Mainly observed in multiple countries in Asia, the holiday is filled with rich culture and tradition which centers around the hope for good fortune and prosperity. The Chinese Zodiac, a system that has existed in Chinese culture for more than 2,000 years, dictates which animal represents a given year. The cycle repeats every 12 years and 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, a creature characterized as brave, heroic, resolute, and vigorous. Tigers have been a prominent artistic subject since ancient times and are seen as symbols associated with power, authority, rebellion and adventure.
We are pleased to offer a curated selection of paintings that pay homage to this elegant and stealthy member of the big cat family.
