I began painting these scarlet ibis just after the 2011 Japanese tsunami, when “seismic” was a common word and there were news reports about “shock waves felt around the world.” Learning about isoseismic lines connecting places where the shock waves were felt at equal strength, I wondered whether birds on the other side of the globe in Florida or South America might feel those shock waves somehow and take flight suddenly. The idea led to this composition of ibis suddenly spreading their wings in a flurry of instinctive reaction. Combining Ibis and Isoseismic led to the title.
