Canyonlands National Park is a dramatic desert landscape, with many unique mesa's, pinnacles and canyons shaped in sandstone, siltstone and mudstones. Each type of sedimentary rock erodes in different shapes dependent on its composition. The red hues of the area are striking. This painting was inspired by a beautiful hike in the Fisher Towers area. The rock formations reminded me of castles, shaped by wind and water. The vastness of the surrounding desert was the most powerful element of the landscape, and what I hoped to capture in this piece.
